Brix Charts

Brix Charts A refractometer can be used to check the Brix readings of various liquids. For example:

Maple syrup – Brix levels indicate when the syrup is concentrated enough

Grape juice – Brix levels indicate when the grapes are ripe enough (sweet enough) to pick for making wine

Plant leaf sap – Brix levels indicate if the plant is healthy enough to resist pests and diseases, and produce a good crop (this is one type of testing that is done regularly at Bee Loved Gardens)

Raw milk - calves (and lambs and piglets, etc) whose mother's milk is a higher Brix (because of an optimum, balanced diet according to the species) will grow faster and be in better health

Fruits and vegetables – Brix levels indicate the quality of the food, helping us choose the highest-quality foods available to us (frequently monitored at Bee Loved Gardens)

Here is a picture of the reading from a beet: just a shade under 12 Brix, which is Excellent!

Brix Chart for Common Vegetables

* it is possible to get values higher than "excellent". We want to push the limits here, and hope to get some "super-excellent" Brix readings on our crops some day!
